RESEARCH PAPER REQUIREMENT
Purpose: To contribute new knowledge or perspectives to what we have been exposed to in the course. This assignment is not a book report.
WHAT to write on. Select ONE topic from the approved topic list.
APPROVED TOPIC LIST
1. Do unions focus so much on raising wages that the leaders lose sight of the job losses that are caused by increased labor costs?
2. Starbucks is a company that has been in the news lately as locations try to unionize. ie Just ideas on what is meant by research paper: How does one go about forming a union, what lessons have been learned from Starbucks initiative, what are the unionizers/company doing right/wrong, what’s the future for the company with a mix of unionized and nonunion locations.
3. Do unions build a stronger working class.
4. Can there be a balance between rights and responsibilities when it comes to unions and the employer?
5. Do unions increase long-term costs which ultimately decreases competitiveness.
6. Paying dues to the union. What is that money used for?[This does not mean submit a balance sheet, ledger or other financial document. We are not interested in how much is spent on office supplies etc. As an example of what is meant by research paper: are funds being used to support political agendas – do members get to vote on expenditures – who decides on how the dues money gets spent.]
7. Discuss ONE labor-management issue in terms of ethical dimensions and ethical questions. [union organizing, labor-management negotiations, employee involvement programs, union obligations for fair representation]
8. Realizing that an employer needs to cut costs and budget deficits, how can we justify collective bargaining and its effect on wages. Can we allow the formation of unions but take wage and benefit negotiations off the table.
9. Discuss the economic impact the recent UAW strike had on the economy.
10. Identify lessons learned from recent UAW negotiations that have changed over the last several decades.
11. Can you deviate from this list and come up with your own topic? YES As long as you have received approval via email from instructor.

interpretation of the term/concept is part of a philosophical debate that is integral to
your paper.
