Assessment 3 Description: Presentation to demonstrate how nurses and healthcare practitioners can use health information and communication technologies (HICT) to improve patient care.

  4. This assessment comprises 25% of the total grade for this course. You must complete this competency assessment with a grade of C or higher.
  5. Please submit this assessment as a PowerPoint or Sway presentation. Include the required Academic Honesty statement and a final reference slide. Nursing students should use APA format; health sciences students may use AMA format.

Purpose of this assessment: The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate critical thinking in a discussion about the health professional’s role in using health information technologies and applications to support the delivery of safe, quality care; to facilitate continuity of care; and to promote patients’ participation in health care.

 

Directions: Please read the full set of directions below before beginning this assessment. For this assignment, you will create a PowerPoint or Sway presentation to demonstrate your understanding and knowledge, based on the literature, of how two health information and communication technologies (HICT) can be used by nurses and healthcare practitioners to improve patient care. Your presentation will use APA formatting (AMA format for non-nursing majors) for citations, references, etc.

  1. Introduction. Explanation of Issues. Identify the purpose of the assessment and why the topic is important. Consider issues related to the increasing prevalence of HICTs in health care and the nurse’s role in the use of HICTs for both systems-based and individual applications.
  2. Description of Two HICT Applications. Briefly describe two health information and communication technology (HICT) applications: one systems-based application and one individual patient application (cite references as appropriate).
  3. HICT application 1 will be a systems-based application
    1. Choose one of the following applications from the list below
      1. Clinical information system (CIS) applications. Such as electronic care plans, electronic medical administration record (eMAR), Computerized provider order entry (CPOE), bar-coding, electronic health record (EHR), clinical decision support tools, computerized alerts, and reminders.
      2. Personal health record or patient portals such as EPIC, Cerner, MyChart, McKesson, etc.
      3. Community/ Public health surveillance systems such Wisconsin immunization data system, COVID-19 Data Tracker, Disability and health data system (DHDS), etc.
      4. Another HICT systems-based application of your choice or interest based on your professional experience.
    2. Discuss how the HICT applications selected can be used to help nurses meet specific aims and outcomes. How can nurses use HICT applications to meet the following? Provide an illustrative example from healthcare practice.
      1. Support safety and quality care
      2. Facilitate continuity of care and care coordination
      3. Partner with patients and families to participate in healthcare
    3. Provide rationale by using at least two pieces of evidence-based literature as a citation.
  4. HICT application 2 will be an individual patient-use application
  5. Choose one of the following applications from the list below
    1. Telehealth applications (such as home telemonitoring, medication management devices, remote/ virtual telehealth, etc.)
    2. Health-related applications (apps) for tablets and mobile phones (such as an app for sleep apnea, diabetes, and heart monitoring, etc.)
    3. Another HICT application of your choice or interest based on your professional experience.
    4. Discuss how the HICT applications selected can be used to help nurses meet specific aims and outcomes. How can nurses use HICT applications to meet the following? Provide an illustrative example from healthcare practice.

  3. When discussing areas of concern, include context of use (situation), complexities of use, and assumptions to use (healthcare professionals and patients)
  4. Provide realistic approaches to address these unexpected outcomes or unintended consequences.
  5. Provide rationale by using at least two pieces of evidence-based literature as a citation.
