Case Study | Nathan and Becky’s Story
Case Study
Nathan and Becky are both Corporals in the Marines. Becky was deployed in Iraq and Nathan in Germany. Becky’s older sister is caring for Nathan and Becky’s son, Tommy, who is 2 years old. When Becky came home to Alabama, she behaved very strangely. When caring for Tommy, she seemed to have no emotional attachment to him. She began taking illegal drugs to help her sleep, but they only helped a little. Finally, Nathan returned from Germany where he had been serving as a medic. He was thrilled to be back home with his family.
Becky tended to ignore Nathan or threaten him. She liked to sneak up behind him and get him in a choke-hold. Having been surprised, Nathan hit her one time. When he telephoned the Veteran’s Administration’s health unit nearby, he was able to get her a medical appointment in three months. He felt like talking with his commander about his situation, but he was confused, somewhat fearful, and ashamed. He was worried about Tommy’s safety as well. He thought Becky would calm down and be her former self, but he was wrong. One morning when Becky could not sleep, she got her gun and shot Nathan several times. Then she got dressed and called 911 to report her assault.
Questions to Discuss
What else could Nathan have done to prevent Becky’s assault?
Should the Marine Corps do anything at Becky’s discharge to prevent the assault?
Why was Nathan so surprised? Could the Marine Corps have done anything at discharge to prepare him better for his return home?
If you knew Nathan what would you advise him to do?
